5. Watermelon :
Summer is the perfect time to be outdoors, but with the hot temperatures,, it’s also important to stay healthy and hydrated. In Ayurveda, the summer season is considered to be the pitta season. The pitta dosha is associated with heat, which can exacerbate imbalances related to excess heat with signs such as skin rashes, gastroesophageal reflux, and an irritable mood. Cooling foods like watermelon are great ways to balance the pitta dosha in this season.
Watermelon is not only a cooling, pitta-balancing fruit; its mineral-rich, 90% water content makes it a wonderful way to stay hydrated in the summer heat. This sweet fruit’s vitamin and mineral makeup includes potassium, magnesium, copper, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, and the antioxidants Vitamin C and lycopene. A newly researched amino acid called citrulline found in watermelon may help prevent excess fat cell accumulation. Research studies have also shown that watermelon can help reduce high blood pressure and even decrease muscle soreness and speed up recovery after physical activity. Watermelon’s benefits go beyond its delicious fruit. Use the inside of the rind on the skin to help cool a sunburn. You can even add the mineral-rich rind to infusions and juices. Eat the seeds for a protein-packed snack. Watermelons absorb everything in the water in the vicinity of the plant so choose organic.
Benefits Of Watermelon:
- Sexual Dysfunction:
Sexual Dysfunction in men can be in the form of loss of libido i.e. having no inclination towards a sexual act. There can also be a low erection time or semen expelled soon after sexual activity. This is also referred to as ‘early discharge or premature ejaculation. Regular intake of Watermelon helps in the proper functioning of male sexual performance. This is due to its Vajikarna (aphrodisiac) property. Watermelon also gives an excellent result in case of loss of libido in women.
- Watermelon and Pitta :
High in beta-carotene, watermelon substantially balances the blood and reduces Pitta justifying its prominence as a summertime fruit. As beta-carotene in carrots "brightens the eye", 1.5 servings of watermelon daily have been shown to reduce age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) by 36%. A bite or two will convince you of watermelon's eye-relaxing abilities. Watermelon contains copious amounts of the anti-oxidants lycopene and vitamin C.
- Watermelon, Water Retention & the Kidneys :
Watermelon is 92% water and 6% sugar. Although the large fruit might be a tempting way to relieve dehydration, watermelon's juiciness only quenches thirst temporarily. Those who suffer from water retention will be happy to hear that, ultimately, watermelon dries the body because of high levels of potassium, a diuretic. The cooling, anti-inflammatory effects of beta-carotene, combined with diuresis help watermelon flush inflammation from the urinary tract. Its low-calorie count, drying quality, and ability to reduce insulin resistance are ideal for Kapha dosha.
- Hyperacidity :
Hyperacidity means an increased level of acid in the stomach. An aggravated Pitta impairs the digestive fire, leading to improper digestion of food and production of Ama. This Ama gets accumulated in the digestive channels and causes hyperacidity. Regular intake of Watermelon helps to reduce the acid level in the stomach because of its Sita (cold) property.
According to my, the above-mentioned fruits are the best fruits of the summer season in India and you should consume these foods on a priority basis to take all the benefits to make your body cool and hydrated.
